Rain, Rain Go Away

People have been talking about this 'bipolar' Berkeley weather we've had lately. It is either raining cats and dogs or it is insanely sunny and clear. I don't mind the rain, but sometimes you just run out of dry socks. Thanks to the Bobcat for helping me get this photo.
"It's disgusting. I'm sitting there in a tepid pool of my own filth. All kinds of microscopic parasites and organisms having sex all around me."

Whales 'n' Plaid

One good thing about being in a photography class is not necessarily learning how or why. But it forces you to actually go out there and take photos; even if you are swamped with work. So a little explanation of the above. The top one draws inspiration from The Sartorialist. The photos on that page seem to really capture how style is an expression of character. I love photos that propel the subject at you, but a cool thing about this one is that it seems to first draw your attention to the surroundings and your eyes are guided towards gentleman. For the whale...well I'm still not versed in the subject of my roommate's ever growing fascination with whales: Kiwimonk. He insisted on bringing this little Moby Dick to the shoot or maybe I did. But it does add character and story to the photo.

"All men live enveloped in whale-lines. All are born with halters round their necks; but it is only when caught in the swift, sudden turn of death, that mortals realize the silent, subtle, ever present perils of life."

Midterms Suck

So today I just finished the toughest week of my semester, and probably will only be topped by my finals week which does not look pretty. Here was my school schedule:

Monday
Microbiology Problem Set

Tuesday
Applied Biochemistry and Microbiology Midterm
Bacterial Pathogenesis Midterm

Wednesday
Photography Assignment due
I was literally standing in the rain at 2am trying to get a landscape shot.

Friday
Microbiology Midterm

So, I have decided that exams suck. Lack of sleep sucks.

Light Drawings

Ever since seeing those Sprint commercials with the weird light moving about I have always wanted to try this. I set the camera to a 30sec exposure, and then my brother and I ran in front of the camera in the dark to try and imprint an image onto the sensor. It helps if you have a visual mind that can remember what you have been drawing so you know where you left off. With each new letter or shape we had to turn off the light, move, and then turn it back on. The one on the left was one of our first ones and we later realized you really need to space out your drawings.

3rd Annual Superbowl Breakfast

2010
It was a game to remember. Not this year's, but the one three years ago. The undefeated Patriots versus an inexperienced Eli Manning and the Giants. For some reason we all bet against the Patriots. Maybe it was because the payout on bodog.com was 6:1, or we just wanted to pull for the underdog. All I know is that as soon as Eli made that last charge down the field and threw for the game winning touchdown it officially became the best Superbowl ever.

Group shot minus Rishi - he has yet to wake up for a breakfast,
or at least stay awake.

On this same fateful day and against all odds a few guys decided they were going to wake up early and make a ridiculous breakfast. It would be composed of the best breakfast foods imaginable in servings that would leave you unbuckling your pants and wanting to take a nap. This communion of best friends would mark the 1st annual Superbowl Sunday Breakfast. This year we celebrated our 3rd communion, some of the faces have changed and some of the founding members were unable to join - however, they were all there in spirit and some even joined in on a teleconference. Here is to keeping the tradition alive. Wherever our life paths take us, may we reconvene once again, on a fateful Sunday where titans battle once again on the field for glory.

Non of us would have waken up if it wasn't for this man. Thanks for
making the 7am trip to Whole Foods CBP.

Valley of Fire

A short drive from Las Vegas, this valley of geologic intrigue provides a pallet of red upon which sandstone formations are weathered into awesome structures. During the winter the weather is absolutely perfect, but I would not want to be here during the summer, as the stone walls would surely act like a brick oven. We passed by Lake Mead and the bathtub like rings around the periphery gave a reminder of the decade long drought the southwest is experiencing. This place is surely a hidden gem, yet to be destroyed by the raspy gamblers.

The Beard

What is it about beards that makes a guy look better on photographs. Something about it just makes the image look better. I really don't know. All I know is that I can't grow one like the one above, and that's just a few days. Props Rish.

The Wall of Innovation

He did it. He finally did. It's done. After years of talk and anticipation my roommate has finally created his wall of whiteboards, posterboards and post-it notes. A wall of imagination, creation and innovation. Some of the greatest ideas of this century will be jotted down on this wall, and to think I'm just on the other side of it. I know him.

Tahoe

This past week my family and I found ourselves in Lake Tahoe. The snow was awesome, the skiing was...well it wasn't. We stayed at my Uncles cabin, a place I have not been to in more than 10 years. Its weird when you come back to place and memories resurface. I remember the sled hill being much bigger, even though it still threw my dad off his ride, and the loft in the cabin being a 100 feet high. I feel that certain memories from the past are changed when you visit the place where you made them. Your childhood perspective has dwindled, and you remember stuff how they really were. Usually things are much smaller. I wonder if my little sister (seen above) will remember anything from her first time in the snow...

She's going to hate me

Twas the first day I got my new DSLR and I was snapping photos left and right. Something about this photo just looks cool. And yet my sister hates the photo - well, sorry sis.

Satchel Redux

So I thought for the very first photo I would take one from the archives of freshman year. The semester was young and we were already scouting filming locations for what might be the most prolific film of our lives...Satchel.
